The Personal Information Protection Commission, a privacy watchdog in Japan, has issued a cautionary notice to OpenAI regarding the collection of sensitive data without obtaining individuals' consent.

According to a statement released by the Commission, it has advised the Microsoft-backed startup responsible for ChatGPT to limit the amount of sensitive data it gathers for machine learning purposes. The Commission also expressed the possibility of taking further action if additional concerns arise.

This development follows the establishment of an intergovernmental forum known as the "Hiroshima AI process" during the recent G7 summit held in Japan.

Numerous regulatory bodies worldwide are currently expressing apprehensions about generative AI technology. The European Union Parliament, in its AI Act, has opted for more stringent regulations, which involve classifying generative AI platforms like ChatGPT as high-risk and demanding increased transparency from the developers of such technology. In the United States, President Biden has also raised concerns regarding the rapid adoption of AI.

In April, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to announce plans for expanding services in Japan. This announcement took place prior to the G7 leaders' summit, where Kishida led discussions on the regulation of AI.
