A major Maine healthcare provider experienced a cyberattack targeting its computer servers over the weekend, prompting the company to temporarily shut down all patient records access.

Northern Light Health informed News Center Maine that while patient records were not stored on the affected servers, as a precautionary measure, they took down all servers for investigation upon detecting an anomaly in their systems.

Suzanne Spruce, a senior vice president at Northern Light Health, stated on Saturday, "We discovered an abnormality in our systems and, as a precautionary measure, decided to shut down our servers."

The company clarified that there is no evidence suggesting any information has been held for ransom. In a statement posted online on Sunday, they reassured the public that their teams have been working tirelessly to review and restore server functionality. They anticipated electronic medical records to be accessible again by the following day, emphasizing their commitment to patient safety and privacy.

Despite the server downtime, patient care remained unaffected, and all Northern Light Hospitals continued operating throughout the weekend. The company expected all servers to resume normal operations by Monday.

The source of the cyberattack on Northern Light Health remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing. Northern Light Health oversees 10 hospitals and eight nursing homes in Maine, employing over 10,000 individuals across the state.
