ABN Amro has issued a warning to its customers regarding a potential risk to their personal information following a ransomware attack on one of its suppliers. This incident has raised concerns about data security and the protection of sensitive information.

The attack targeted AddComm, a company responsible for the distribution of documents and tokens to both ABN Amro clients and employees, in both physical and digital formats. The breach has prompted an immediate response from the bank and external cybersecurity experts have been called in to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the exact nature and extent of the data that may have been compromised at AddComm.

In response to the attack, ABN Amro has suspended its business dealings with AddComm. The bank is also proactively reaching out to customers who might be affected by this breach, informing them of the potential risk to their personal information. The aim is to ensure that customers are aware of the situation and can take any necessary precautions to protect themselves.

ABN Amro expressed deep regret over the incident and issued an apology to its customers. "We very much regret the situation at our supplier’s and apologise wholeheartedly for it," the bank stated. Despite the breach, the bank has reassured customers that there is currently no evidence to suggest that any unauthorized parties have used the data of ABN Amro clients. The bank also confirmed that its own systems remained unaffected by the attack, which is a critical aspect of maintaining customer trust and security.

The incident has been reported to the Dutch Data Protection Authority and other relevant regulatory bodies by ABN Amro, highlighting the seriousness with which the bank is treating the breach. In parallel, AddComm is preparing to report the incident to the police, a necessary step in the legal and investigative processes that follow such cyberattacks.

This situation underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and the challenges that companies face in protecting sensitive data from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. ABN Amro’s swift response and transparent communication with its customers are key steps in managing the fallout from the attack and reinforcing the bank's commitment to data security and customer trust.
