Abstract: Many organisations have either implemented or are planning to implement an operational performance management process to help them improve internal processes and resulting business returns. Yet so many fail to deliver predictable and sustained improvements to their key performance indicators (KPIs) despite the efforts invested in embedding performance improvement processes within their business units.
An important aspect of effective performance improvement is the ability to accurately predict and measure the impact a single action or change activity will have on a pre-defined set of KPIs. A common mistake made by many organisations is an insufficient assessment of the impact of any planned action or change. Such assessments should take into account not only all other changes or activities that are planned or happening within the organisation itself, but also those outside the organisation, which may still influence internal processes and procedures. The result of neglecting this, is that the total benefit achievement does not match the sum of individual predicted benefits from the actions taken.
